One Iowa North Scholarship Fund

The Board of Mason City One Iowa-North established the Craig W. Hickok Memorial Scholarship in 2015 to acknowledge Craig’s lifelong commitment to inclusion, education, support and equality in creating appropriate educational settings that are safe and individualized to meet student needs. As one who loved and supported young people, Craig was a passionate supporter of the arts, including the musical, theatrical and visual arts efforts of students. Craig was involved as an activist ally in social justice issues including racial equality, women’s rights and support of the LGBTQ community.

In 2020, One Iowa-North established another fund, the Jeannie Snyder Memorial Scholarship, to honor Jeannie’s support of the LGBTQ community as an ally. Her support and love for her gay son and his partner was an important aspect of her life. During her lifetime, Jeannie had a big passion for helping other people. She worked with another individual to raise funds from local business leaders to build the Kavanaugh House, a hospice care facility in Des Moines, Iowa. Jeannie served on the board and also as president for Hospice of Central Iowa.

These scholarships enable One Iowa-North to award up to three $2500.00 scholarships this spring to self-identified LGBTQ youth or straight allies who are 17 as of May 20, 2020. Applicants must plan to attend or currently be attending a post-secondary trade or educational institution. The purpose of these scholarships is to encourage continuing education, and to promote a positive image of LGBTQ youth.
